If the "old" USA was not a state, and members could simply leave without asking the federal government, what was it then? Something like the EU of today? And what about the minority in the South that was against secession? If it can be proven, I have no problem with that line of thinking, that every state should have the right to leave, but I never found very convincing evidence. I would also like to be convinced that unilateral dissolution of the old Union, without popular vote etc, was constitutional. Recognition would have been the first step of ending the Civil War.
